the burbs

A Group Exhibition

June 4 to August 29, 2003

Artists' Reception: Wed., June 4th 6 to 8pm

DFN Gallery is pleased to present the burbs, a group exhibition of paintings, drawings, and photographs of suburban imagery and iconography. From Fairfield Porter and David Hockney to Mark Tansey and Martin Mull, the burbs will include the work of over 40 artists who have turned their attention to the American suburban experience.

In this exhibition, the burbs are depicted and dissected from different vantage points to produce idyllic, comic, dead-pan, and ironic observations of an environment that has arguably formed and influenced more post-World War II American artists than any other place. While many of these artists have left the comfort and homogeneity of their suburban youth in search of the energy and diversity of the big city, the burbs continue to inspire and inform their work.

the burbs, curated by Peter Drake, and John Nickle, features the work of:

Ben Aronson, Amy Bennett, Tom Birkner, Alfonse Borysewicz, John Bowman, Charles Burchfield, Orly Cogan, Gregory Crane, Brady Dollarhide, Peter Drake, Jana Duda, Dan Feldman, Eric Fischl, Cornelia Foss, Susan Grossman, Rob Grunder, Julie Heffernan, Todd Hido, David Hockney, Edward Hopper, Catherine Howe, David Humphrey, Julia Jacquette, Lisa Krivacka, KK Kozik, Bob Knox, Stephen Lack, Bryan LeBoeuf, David Levinthal, David Mahler, Mark Mann, Bob Marty, John Moore, Martin Mull, Lori Nix, Fairfield Porter, David Sandlin, Peter Schroth, Kerry Schuss, Wade Schumann, Cindy Sherman, Laurie Simmons, Joel Sokolov, Mark Tansey, Josette Urso, Jon Waldo, Dan Witz, Thomas Woodruff, Robert Yarber, and others.

DFN Gallery is located at 176 Franklin Street in Tribeca, between Greenwich and Hudson Streets. The gallery is open Monday through Saturday 11 to 7 (Monday to Friday July/August). For further information, contact Rick Davidman at 212-334-3400 or go to:

CELEBRATED ARTISTS TO CREATE ORIGINAL WORKS FOR SALE TO PUBLIC WITH PORTION OF PROCEEDS TO BENEFIT NEW YORK’S SCULPTURE CENTER

New York, NY, March 17, 2003 -- The Fragrance Foundation today announced that celebrated artists David Humphrey, Caitlin Parker, Peter Drake and Jonathan Seliger will be among the recognized artists to participate in SCENT, An Exhibition Of Original Art Inspired By Fragrance to be shown during National FiFi Week (June 9 13, 2003). A celebration of this year’s FiFi Awards theme “Fragrance ‘N Art,” the exhibition is curated by Dinaburg Arts and will showcase original works created by a roster of international artists. To provide support to the art community and celebrate the collaboration, each piece will be sold for $350 with a portion of proceeds benefiting the SculptureCenter, a non-profit cultural institution that supports and promotes contemporary art.

SCENT will be previewed at The Proposition, a gallery in New York’s Chelsea art district, at a private cocktail reception on May 15, 2003 for members and friends of The Fragrance Foundation. A public preview will be held on May 16, 2003 before the exhibition officially opens. During FiFi Week, it will be shown at FiFi events including the Salute to the FiFi Nominees Breakfast Ceremony (June 6) and the 31st Annual FiFi Awards (June 9).

The “Fragrance ‘N Art” theme and the SCENT exhibition are a tribute to the inherent ability of fragrance to affect humanity on a number of levels. Artists will create an original 8” X 10” piece based on whatever scent most inspires them, for example: a fresh flower, green tea, a nature path, or a finished fragrance. A twist on the usual gallery showing, the artists will sign his/her work on the back of the canvas and his/her identity will be kept secret until after the piece has been sold - to reinforce that art is bought for the appeal of the work itself, much like a fragrance is purchased for its personal appeal to the buyer. A list of all participants will be available to let attendees know the high caliber of artistic talent available.

“We are thrilled to have both established and emerging artists participate in SCENT,” said Rochelle Bloom, president of The Fragrance Foundation. “This exhibition is a tribute to fragrance in all its many forms and gives the public an opportunity to secure original art from artists, who, in some cases, sell for as much as $18,000. We are especially pleased to present a portion of the proceeds to SculptureCenter in support of the artistic community.”

FIFI WEEK EVENTS
Other FiFi Week events include the 31st Annual FiFi Awards (June 9), Salute to the FiFi Nominees Breakfast Ceremony (June 6)

ABOUT THE FIFI AWARDS www.fragrance.org
The FiFi Awards honor the fragrance industry’s creative achievements and is considered the “Oscars” of the fragrance industry. Held annually in New York City, the ceremony is attended by more than 1,500 members of the international fragrance community each year as well as the general public. Awards are presented by celebrities from the fashion, theater, film and television industries. Members of The Fragrance Foundation include designers, packagers, retailers, manufacturers and suppliers as well as media, advertising and public relations agencies.

ABOUT SCULPTURECENTER www.sculpture-center.org
SculptureCenter, an active contributor to New York's cultural community since 1928, is a non-profit organization in New York that exclusively champions contemporary sculpture in all of its forms. SculptureCenter supports and encourages experimentation and excellence in contemporary sculpture by providing opportunities for artists to produce and exhibit work in multiple dimensions; educating audiences about sculpture and its relationship to other art forms and fields; and acting as a catalyst for new ideas in contemporary art and culture. In 2001, SculptureCenter purchased a former trolley repair shop in Long Island City, Queens. This newly renovated facility, to be designed by designer and artist Maya Lin, will include 6,000 square feet of interior exhibition space, offices, and a 3,000 outdoor exhibition space. A planned building addition will add a work studio and apartment for visiting artists, a sculpture library and public reading room.

- David Humphrey: Currently affiliated with the Brent Sikkema Gallery in Chelsea, David Humphrey’s work has shown in numerous national and international solo and group exhibitions from Geneva to Basel to London and Miami and has been reviewed by prestigious publications such as Artnews, The New Yorker, Art in America and The New York Times. His work, which currently sells for up to $16,000, is included in the public collections at Metropolitan Museum of Art (NY), Cleveland Center for Contemporary Art (OH), and Exxon Corporation (NY).

- Caitlin Parker: Caitlin received her BA Fine Art - Painting from the Slade School of Fine Art in London in 1998. Her work sells for up to $6,500 and is included in the Saks Fifth Avenue Art Collection and The British Airways Collection.

THE EXHIBITION
Participating artists will be asked to create original 8” X 10” works of art based on the inspiration of a scent, for example: fresh flowers, green tea, a nature path or a finished fragrance. The artists will be instructed not to sign his/her work on the front and the creator of each specific piece will be kept secret until after the event to reinforce that art is bought for the appeal of the art itself, much like a fragrance is purchased for its personal appeal to the buyer. Pieces will be presented cohesively at the exhibition and will be labeled by number with artists’ signatures on the back of the work. A list of all participating artists will be displayed for attendees.

A private gala preview will be held on May 15, 2003 at The Proposition (www.theproposition.com), 559 West 22nd Street, 2nd Floor in New York City. The works will be held over for a public preview on May 16 before officially opening during FiFi Week (June 9 13).
